Born Jean Robert, Ipousteguy began using his mother's maiden name in 1948. He began his artistic endeavours painting and making stained-glass windows in Paris. He began making sculptures in 1949 and became well known for his elaborate figurative pieces. Inspired by Surrealism, his sculptures take on an organic yet abstract view of the human figure. He works in mostly bronze and sometimes marble to create emotional, dreamlike characters. In 1964, he won a major prize at the Venice Biennale.
