Biography
Jennie Augusta Brownscombe was born in Pennsylvania and attended the School of Design for Women of Cooper Union a well as the Antique and Life Schools of the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League of New York.
A prize-winning student at the Cooper Institute School of Design for Women and the National Academy of Design, both in New York City, Brownscombe in 1875 became a founding member of the Art Students League, where she later served on the faculty.
It is believed that she also studied in Paris and Brittany. Known as a magazine illustrator she also produced the illustrations for greeting cards and calendars. She is frequently compared to Norman Rockwell as she painted scenes of everyday Americana.
