Biography
Job was more versatile than his younger brother, occasionally painting biblical and genre subjects which more specifically portrayed life in Haarlem by showing, for example, a baker's shop or a musician, sometimes framed by a window-a motif popularized by Gerrit Dou in Leiden. In 1644 Job became the pupil of Jacob Willemsz de Wet, a Haarlem painter influenced by Rembrandt. In 1654 he entered the Haarlem St. Luke's Guild, and around 1655 he and his brother Gerrit traveled to Germany along the Rhine (see previous entry). When he returned to Haarlem, Job shared a house with his brother and sister and occupied himself principally as a painter of architectural scenes. Job was influenced by a number of other painters, including Pieter de Grebber, Adriaen van Ostade, and Emanuel de Witte (who was important for the development of the architectural painting of both Berkheyde brothers). Job, however, was less interested in topographical accuracy than Gerrit, and he produced more evocative effects of atmosphere and setting. Job's color was softer and more diverse. His View of the Oude Gracht in Haarlem (dated 1666, The Hague, Mauritshuis) is considered one of his finest street scenes. The painting concerns itself more with the effects of light on water and trees than with an accurate depiction of architecture the building of the title is nearly obliterated by the trees lining the canal. Job's contribution to genre scenes has recently been recognized, and these subjects are precisely rendered treatments with the figures directly confronting the viewer. In each case they are at once specific in their appearance and gesture and archetypal in their presentation. No dated works by Berkheyde are known before 1659, and roughly seventy paintings are known today.
