Biography
(born Zauffaly or Zauffelij, Johann(es) (Josephus)
Painter born near Frankfurt, mainly remembered for his minutely detailed, richly colored English Conversation Pieces and theatre pictures; known as a cultured, complex and versatile artist. He also painted religious and mythological works, and large-scale fresco and oil decorations in the German Rococo style. In the 1770s he painted Baroque court portraits in life-scale for the Grand Duke of Tuscany, as well as genre pictures of Italian low-life and peasant festivals. |
