Biography
| Jan is the most well documented and well known member of a prolific Amsterdam family of landscape painters that included Anthonie, Jan, and his son Abraham (b. 1643). Traveling beyond Amsterdam, Jan painted castles, towns, and faraway villages (such as in Friesland) seen in the wintertime, with ice and falling snow. His winter town views are the most important of an oeuvre that includes naval battles, views of beaches, and fantasy scenes of harbors. His topographies are valued for their skilled execution and sense of proportion though his oeuvre is considered uneven in quality. His earliest known painting, an impressive work of 1637, is a view of Amsterdam's Old Town Hall after a fire. |
