Biography
| John Boultbee was known as a sporting painter. He was born in Baptised Osgathorpe, Leicestershire, 4 June 1753 and died in Liverpool, 30 November 1812. He entered school in 1775 and exhibited landscapes in 1775. He must have studied the work of Sawrey Gilpin, and also perhaps Stubbs, and he exhibited horse pictures in 1783 from Derby, and 1787-88 from Loughborough. His signed and dated horse pictures range from 1784 to 1805. He lived later at Chester and finally at Liverpool, where he displayed eight sporting pictures in 1812 shortly before his death. Some pictures of 1797 of cattle and sheep at Petworth, signed 'J. Bolteby are probably his. He has a certain feeling for atmosphere and hazy landscapes. |
