Biography
| John Ellys was a portrait painter. He was born March 1st 1700. He became a pupil of Sir James Thornhill, a painter in the Italian Baroque tradition, in 1716 and later studied in the Vanderbank Academy. Ellys had some artistic success, but his identified portraits are very dreary survivors of the Kneller tradition, of which he was one of the last exponents. In 1736, he succeeded Mercier as principal Painter to the Prince of Wales. Ellys died in London on September 14th 1757. |
