| Eccard was a portrait painter, a native of Germany. He was an assistant of J.B. Van Loo, and followed his master to England. Eccard remained as Van Loo's assistant until the master left England in 1742. Eccard subsequently set up on his own with some success. He specialized in portraits on a fairly small scale of roughly 15x12, and painted a series of twenty six for Horace Walpole between 1746 and 1754. Stylistically, Eccard follows entirely from Van Loo. The artist exhibited in 1761 and 1768. In 1770, he sold his studio and retired to Chelsea. The artist died in London in October 1779. |
