| John clevely Sr. was a shipwright and marine painter at Deptford. Apprenticed to a Thomas Miller 1726. The artist died Deptford May 21st 1777. Painter of docks and shipbuilding scenes. Exhibited records are confusing but a number of shipping pieces exhibited FS from 1764 onwards are no doubt his. His twin sons were born in Deptford December 25th 1747 John Jr., died in London June 25th 1786, and Robert, died in Dover September 29th 1809. Both were skilful marine artists in oil and watercolours, and John was taught watercolour by Paul Sandby . They went as artists attached to various expeditions and most of their work is not in oils. John exhibited from 1770-1786 Robert at first as hon. exhibited from 1780-1803. Robert was a marine painter to the Duke of Clarence in 1801, and to the Prince of Wales 1802. He specialised in scenes of naval actions. |
