John White Abbot learned painting from Francis Towne at Exeter. His watercolors and drawings are original and admirable (Mallalieu), but it was only oil landscapes that he exhibited at RA 1793-1805, 1810 and 1822. These are conscientious but conventional exercises in a generally pastoral or elegiac mood. He also made some etchings. Nothing of his work is known before 1790.
