Biography
| Joseph Anton, the son of a clergyman, studied briefly with Hayman and then completed his studies at home. He was settled in London by 1784 and married by 1787. He was in good practice, especially with naval officers (his best known sitter being Nelson) and government officials and could achieve a crisp likeness. However, his full-length figures stand rather insecurely. Ben Marshall was apprenticed to him for three years in 1791. By July 1798 he was certified as insane and never recovered, but portraits by him were still exhibited. His unfinished portraits seem to have been completed by a less sensitive hand. |
