Biography
| Joseph Bell was the first student to enter the Royal Academy Schools in 1769 at the age of 34. He won a gold medal in 1771 for his 'Venus entreating Vulcan to forge arms for Aeneas'. From 1770 until at least 1775 he was 'limner' in the family of Sir John Hussey Delaval and for years was permanently employed in Delaval's country houses and in London, teaching children, painting portraits. Four full lengths are at Seaton DelavaJ, and others by or copied by Bell are at Doddington and in Ireland. Bell later retired to Newcastle and practised as a portrait painter; a portrait of 1782 shows some influence from Romney others of 1788 are merely provincial. |
