Biography
| Josiah Boydell was a portrait and history painter, and publisher. He was born in Hawarden, Flint, 18 January 1752 and died Halliford, 27 March 1817. He was the nephew, and eventually partner and successor to Alderman John Boydell (1719-1804), who revived the engraving industry in Britain and promoted the Shakespeare Gallery. He Entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1769. He exhibited in 1776 (a portrait and a fancy picture)and in 1772-79, he displayed portraits (several of them small scale whole lengths) and history pictures, and historical drawings in chalk. He also painted seven subjects for the Shakespeare Gallery, but latterly devoted his time to publishing and activity in the City, where he too became an Alderman. |
