Biography
Israels was a Dutch painter and one of the leading figures of the Hague school. He studied painting in Amsterdam and then travelled to Paris and Germany. He saw the unfortunate and woeful as subjects for paintings lending his style a somber mood in the manner of Rembrandt's dark shadows. Many of his paintings speak of the lives of fisherfolk. Also, his naratives gave way to more purely pictorial communication through tone and at times very beautiful color.
