Pantoja painted in the court of Philip II and Philip III and is considered one of the best representatives of the Spanish school of court painters. He followed the Spanish tradition of Royal Portraits, initiated with the famous portrait of Charles V by Titian. Many subsequent court painters were influenced by his style including Diego Velazquez.
