Biography
| In fifteenth century Korea, Kang loved to paint and was known as "literati." Kang Hui-an was one such artist. Free from the restraints imposed on professional artists employed by the government, he was able to create his own style that was influenced by Chinese landscape painting of the Northern and Southern School of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Painting and calligraphy were undifferentiated at that time, and known assohwa. Works such as ftsSageContemplating the Water (c.1420-1464) had an impact on mainstream Korean art for many years to come, with its human figure stark in contrast to its background landscape painted in rough, thick strokes of ink. Little is known of Hui-an's personal life. |
