kasia kay art projects gallery is pleased to present Perception, Kim Curtis’ fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. The artist’s oil paintings, often described as abstract landscapes, evoke and mimic patterns found in nature. Bright colors and bold shapes inspire different meanings within each viewer, eliciting a variety of interpretations.

In the artist’s words, “While my paintings start as loud noise and confusion, they end in a tamer version of those. In the process, I alter the surfaces while continually switching the position and direction of the panels. This ongoing interference discourages an easy, logical conclusion and results in a situation that seems familiar but is unrecognizable - a place where logic is again elusive and each viewer’s own archive of experience provides the clarity they seek.”

Kim Curtis comes to painting from a rich background in theatrical costume design. For thirteen years, Ms. Curtis designed and constructed costumes for theaters throughout the San Francisco Bay Area including a six-year stint as Master Craftsperson for the San Francisco Opera Costume Shop. At the Opera, Curtis constructed the armor, jewelry, headdresses and masks for some of the world’s most renowned singers and designers. She then returned to the California College of the Arts where she further developed the style she had honed through years of costume sketching. Ms. Curtis holds a degree from UC Berkeley in History of Art as well as in Painting from CCA. Both her costume work and her study of Art have brought her to work extensively abroad, mainly in Italy and Germany. She now paints full-time in her studio in Urbana, IL and is represented in Chicago by kasia kay art projects gallery.
