Biography
| Konstantin Alexeevitch Korovin studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under I.M. Pryanishnikov, V.G. Perov, A.K. Savrasov, V.D. Polenov in 1875 - 1883, at the Academy of Arts in 1882. During his years of studies he generally created landscapes, portraits in the manner of «Peredvizhniki», but sometimes with impressionistic trend. At the end of 1880 he finally shaped his painting style - a temperament wide touch, sturdy manner, sometimes unsymmetrical composition. In 1900-1910 he used intensively various decorative elements. Participated in exhibitions of the World of Art, the Union of Russian Artist, the Fellowship of Travelling Art Exhibition since 1889. Worked as theatre designer since 1885. Decorated productions of the Savva Mamontov Private Opera: Snowgirl, Pskovityanka, Sadko by N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov, Khovanshina by M.P. Mousorgsky, Aida by G. Verdi, Carmen by G. Bizet and others. Created decorations for more than 100 stage productions at the Bolshoy Theatre (Moscow), the Mariinskiy Theatre and Alexandrinskiy Theatre (St.Petersburg). Since 1910, the Art Director with the Moscow Emperor Theatres. Moved to Paris in 1923. In 1920-30 generally he created landscapes of Paris at the evening and still lifes. At that time, he returned very seldom to Russian topics. His one-man exhibitions were in Paris (1925, 1929), in Rome, Prague, Stockholm, New York. In 1961, his one-man memorial exhibitions were arranged in Moscow, Leningrad, and Kiev, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of his birth. |
