Biography
Born on the Navajo reservation, Larry Yazzie spent much of his early childhood in his grandmother's hogan. When he still a young child, his mother was widowed and married an Anglo from the Northwest Coast. At an early age, I experienced cultures other than Navajo and Indian and it gave me an openness towards all people -- an openness to discovering our similarities, not just our differences, he says.
Accepted at the prestigious Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) in Santa Fe, Yazzie discovered his creative connection with sculpture and graduated with honors in 1985. Never using a model, the artist describes his work mode as a creative rhythm, like when I work for days on end when I carve, I don't know what I am going to carve next. I like that -- not knowing. Interested in preserving some of the traditional ways of the Navajo via his work, Yazzie often immortalizes religious ceremonies with his sculpture.
Yazzie works with Indiana limestone, Italian marble, Virginia soapstone and Utah alabaster as well as bronze. Bronze allows me to offer limited pieces of my work without compromising my creativity, he says.
A consistent winner of top awards since 1986, Yazzie's work has been shown at the Heard Museum, Eiteljorg Museum, and the Museum of Northern Arizona.
