le Nabis
Art Fortune | le Nabis
Formed by a group of Parisian artists who studied at the Julian Academy in the 1890s, the Les Nabis art movement’s goal was to rebel against the naturalistic imagery made popular by the Realist artists who had preceded them. Influenced from the work of Paul Gauguin and Japanese prints, Les Nabis (coming from the Hebrew word meaning ‘prophet’) painted flat strips of color and pattern in order to create a decorative painting style that stemmed from Gauguin’s synthetic shapes. The members of the group which included Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard argued that all art, at its basic level was varying segments of colors all put together as one, and used this rationale as their philosophy. Les Nabis went on to enjoy mild success in the art world and later became a great influence for the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 20th century.
Maurice Denis, a founding member of the Nabis once said:
“Remember that a picture, before being a war horse, a female nude, or some anecdote, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order."
