Biography
| Son of a clergyman, Abbot studied briefly with Hayman and then completed his studies at home. He was settled in London by 1784; married by 1787. He was in good practice, especially with naval officers (his best known sitter being Nelson) and government officials and could achieve a crisp likeness, but his full-length figures stand rather insecurely. His certain portraits are all of men. Ben Marshall was apprenticed to him for three years in 1791. By July 1798 he was certified as insane and never recovered, but portraits by him were exhibited in 1798 and 1800. His unfinished portraits seem to have been completed by a less sensitive hand. |
