Biography
| Leon Samoylovitch Bakst was born in Grodno, then lived in St.Petersburg, and since 1909 - he mostly lives in Paris. He is known as a Russian painter, graphic artist, and theatre designer. Bakst studied at the Academy of Fine Arts (1883-1887) under P.P. Chistyakov and K.B. Venig and in Paris in 1893 at G.-L. Gerom's studio, R. Gulien's and A. Edelfelt's academy. Since 1914 he became the academician of the Academy of Fine Arts. He is one of the founders and active members of "The World of Arts" union, one of the leading decorators of "Russian seasons abroad" which were organized by S.P. Dyaghilev. He worked in theatres in Petersburg, London, Rome, Brussel, Paris, New-York. At the same time with theatre design works, he created easel works (portraits, landscapes). |
