Biography
| He was probably the brother of veit Baumhauer who worked in Wurzburg. Lienhardt worked in Tubingen with Jacob Woller (d 1564), who was probably also his teacher. The choir of the Stiftskirche of St Georg in Tubingen had in 1550 become the burial place of the ducal family of Wurttemberg. Baumhauer and Woller collaborated on a stone tomb there for Duke Christopher (d 1568), his wife Anna (d 1589) and Prince Eberhard (d 1568). Although the tomb bears Wollers masters symbol, most of the work was done by Baumhauer. Most of his work consisted of making tombs in stone, mainly in the form of wall monuments with statues. In 1561 he made a tomb for Ritter Jerg von Ehingen in the parish church in Kilchberg. The tomb of Hans Herter von Herteneck (d 1563) in the Stiftskirche of the Heilige Kreuz at Stuttgart has Baumhauers initials on it.As regards Baumhauers secular work, a few figures that he made for fountains have survived. The figure bearing the coat of arms on the Renaissance fountain in the Marktplatz in Leonberg was made in 1566 (original, Eltingen, former Rathaus). The figure on the Marktbrunnen in Karlsruhe-Durlach (1567; original, Karlsruhe-Durlach, Pfinzgaumus.) is attributed to Baumhauer on stylistic grounds. On the Marktbrunnen at Munderkingen the towns coat of arms is borne by a lion; this sculpture and the bearded figure bearing the coat of arms on the fountain in the Marktplatz in Reutlingen (fragments of the original, Reutlingen, Heimatmus.) were both made in 1570 and carry Baumhauers masters symbol. A wall tomb for Peter Freiherr von Gultingen and his Wife Elisabeth in the Protestant Stadtkirche at Berneck was also created in 1570. It is a simple tomb. The doll-like figures and finely worked out ornamentation are characteristic of Baumhauers work. The epitaph in the church of St Georg in Schwieberdingen that Obervogt Reinhardt von Ruppur ordered for his wife Rosa von Gultingen and their three sons was Baumhauers last important work. |
