Biography
| Louis Cheron was a history painter and book illustrator.The artist was Born in Paris September 2nd 1660.The artist died London May 26th 1725.He Won the prix de Rome at the Academie in 1676 and in Rome studied especially the work of Raphael and his scholars. He did religious painting in Paris but, being a protestant, was encouraged by the Duke of Montagu to come to England and paint the ceilings at Boughton House (building completed 1694, which remain his major surviving works. He became a denizen 1703, and was naturalised in 1710. He had a certain practice in easel pictures of historical subjects, but was chiefly concerned with teaching drawing at Kneller's Academy from 1711, and was one of the chief promoters of the St. Martin's Lane Academy, From 1715 he did much book illustration. Many of his drawings are in the British Museum and he had great influence on the teaching of drawing in London in the 1720s. |
