Biography
| Luca Cambiaso was born 1527 in Genoa, Italy, son of the painter Giovanni Cambiaso. Under the training of his father and the study of his Genoese artistic predecessors, Luca quickly began executing large frescoes and decorations in Genoa, including the Palazzo Doria, the church of San Matteo, the Villa Imperiale, and the Palazzo Meridiana. At this point, the Mannerist religious style Luca was known for became increasingly more naturalistic and simplistic. In 1583, Luca went to Spain to work for King Phillip II completing frescoes begun by Castello in the Escorial. The Paradise fresco completely on the vaulting of the Escorial is considered one of Luca's most important works, along with the Martyrdom of San Giorgio (church of San Giorgio), a Pieta (church of Santa Maria da Carignano), Venus and Amor, and some remarkable nocturnes. |
