Biography
| Lucas van Leyden was one of the leading engravers of the time. His draftsmanship was unequaled and his influence on the development of engraving profound. His work was significant to artists such as Hendrick Goltzius, Jacob de Gheyn II, and Rembrandt van Rijn in the Netherlands and to Andrea del Sarto and Jacopo Pontormo in Italy. He was successful throughout the Netherlands and Germany during his lifetime and posthumously through the repeated reprinting of his work. As well as producing at least 168 engravings, he also made a number of woodcuts, drawings, paintings, book illustrations, and etchings that all exhibit his prodigious talent. Little is known of his early training. The best source of information is the biographical account by Flemish painter Karel van Mander. He is thought to have received instruction from his father, a painter, and Dutch painter Cornelis Engelbrechtsz, whose influence in his early paintings can be seen. Van Leyden was a child prodigy. At fourteen years old he produced a famous engraving of Mehmed and the Monk Sergius (c.1508) that reveals the young artist's tendency to choose unusual and rarely depicted myths and stories. This unorthodox approach to subject matter mirrored his imaginative interpretation of scenes. He typically invested his images with a psychological depth that reflected his understanding of human nature. One of the greatest influences on van Leyden's style was that of Albrecht Durer, although van Leyden's work remained strikingly original and inventive. In the mid-1520s van Leyden met the artist Jan Mabuse, whose work also influenced htm and was manifested through a greater dynamism and energy, and a more classical interpretation of his figures. |
