Biography
| Ranked among the more significant painters of landscapes in Flanders, Lucas van Uden reportedly painted background landscapes for Rubens, whose work Lucas is also said to have copied. No proof of collaborations between the two artists exists, except for Uden's obvious admiration for Rubens's landscapes. Since Lucas is not mentioned as a pupil in the Antwerp Guild, scholars conclude that he likely studied with his father, Artus van Uden (d. 1627/8). Lucas married in 1627, the year in which he became a master in the St. Luke's Guild. Houbraken reports that Lucas habitually rose before dawn to study the effects of sunrise. In 1644 Lucas traveled up the Rhine valley, returning to Antwerp in 1646, He may have traveled elsewhere shortly thereafter. In 1649 Lucas was registered as a buytenpoorter, he thus retained his citizenship during his absence from Antwerp. The wide, horizontal orientation and deep horizons of his landscapes, as evident in the example in Dresden, clearly show a debt to Rubens. On the whole, however, Lucas demonstrates a more prosaic mind and more piecemeal approach. His daughter, Maria van Uden, was also a painter. |
