Biography
Lucio Fontana was a painter and the son of an Italian father and an Argentine mother. He was mostly known as the founder of Spatialism and his ties to Arte Povera. Lucio lived primarily in Argentina, stayed until 1922, working as a sculptor along with his father and then on his own.
For the rest of his life, Fontana split his time between Italy and Argentina, living and working in both at different periods of time. In Argentina, Fontana founded the Altamira Academy with his students and published the White Manifesto. Back in Italy, he collaborated with other Abstract artists to publish the manifesto for Spatialism.
From 1958, Fontana began his series of slash paintings for which is he well known today. The paintings comprised of a series of slashes and ruptures on blank canvases.
