Magda Cordell was known for combining vigorous action painting with imagery. A cast of women and long necked figures androids with a patina of pathos. The word list he compiled in response to Cordell's work mixes space age terminology with fashionable slang.Cordell and her husband, a musical director at EMI, were members of the Independent Group, which centered on London's Institute of Contemporary Arts in the 1950s. Cordell had a solo exhibition of collage and monotypes there in 1955. The group was formed by the design historian Reyner Banham, and then was reconfigured by Alloway and the painter John McHale in 1954 in order to explore, through lectures and exhibitions, art's relationship with popular culture and the mass media.
