Biography
| Known for her woven sculpture, Abakanowicz's work is abstract and figurative in nature. She says of her work, "I feel overwhelmed by quantity where counting no longer makes sense. By unrepeatability within such quantity. A crowd of people or birds, insect or leaves, is a mysterious assemblage of variants of a certain prototype, a riddle of nature abhorrent to exact repetition or inability to produce it, just as a human hand can not repeat its own gesture." All her sculptures are individuals, especially those who are part of a group, but in so being a part of a group they are transformed into a third thing. That intangible being is what Abakanowicz tries to draw out. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland and has recieved many European and Polish awards for her work. She also participated in the 1980 Venice Biennale. |
