Mannerism
Art Fortune | Mannerism
The Mannerist movement is a relatively short-live artistic style that lasted from 1520-1580. Following the harmonies of High Renaissance artists like Leonardo de Vinci, Raphael, and the early work of Michelangelo. Mannerism is known for its intellectual approach as well as its unnatural color palette and proportions.
Jacopo da Pontormo, and early Mannerist artist exemplifies the above qualities well. In his famous piece, Entombment, from 1528, we can de Christ’s elongated, unnatural form being taken from the Cross. Filling the crowded canvas around him are several figures who mourn for his loss, all portrayed in bright, acrid colors. Another painting done in the mid 1540s is Bronzio’s Allegory with Venus and Cupid, is an even more perplexing scene. Bright, artificial coloring and skewed body positions are also seen in the piece, in addition to strangely juxtaposed images of heads, arms and other bizarre human figures adorn the background.
Mannerism, as we can see, is a very strange sub-category within the realm of art history that often goes underappreciated by many art scholars of today. Despite its sometimes strange tendencies, Mannerism became a slight influence for the highly successful Baroque movement in the 17th century.
