Biography
| Born Maria Louisa Catherine Cecilia Hadfield at Florence. The atrist died at Lodi January 5th 1838. Married in London, 1781, Richard Cosway. She was a miniaturist and a painter of light historical subjects in the vein of Angelica Kauffmann.Something of a youthful prodigy, she studied at Florence and Rome and was elected a member of the Florence Academy 1778.Came to London 1779 and was introduced to the best circles. After her marriage to Cosway she exhibited RA 1781 1801,mainly historical subjects. She was a talented musician and the Cosways gave spectacular musical parties in the 1780s.She lived abroad a good deal,1791-1794,and 1811-1815, founding a girls' college at Lodi in 1812, to which she retired after Cosway's death, converting it into a convent. She was made an Austrian Baroness in 1834. |
