Mary McCune Black was the daughter of Thomas Black; assistant to Alan Ramsay in early 1760's. Her documented 'Dr Messenger Monsey', 1764 (Royal College of Physicians) is a very competent portrait in the manner of Dance. She was a fashionable teacher of crayons to upper-class ladies. She exhibited at the Salon in 1768 and was made an honorable member. Signed and dated portraits of the later 1790s are in the manner of Westall and do not look the work of the same artist.
