Biography
Maya Lin was born in Athens, Ohio in 1959. After graduating from high school, Lin applied to Yale University in order to study architecture. It was during her senior year at Yale that she submitted her design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. The competition was opened to all Americans not just certified professionals. In 1981at the age of 21, Lin's design was chosen from a group of 1,421 unidentified submissions. Her design consisted of two 200-foot black granite walls. The walls would sink ten feet below the ground and would meet at an angle of 130 degrees. Roughly 58,000 names of the men and women killed or missing in Vietnam would be inscribed into both walls. Lin was highly criticized due to her unusual design for the memorial and to say the least her name was not mentioned at the 1982 commencement ceremony.
The Women's Table, 1993 is a fountain sculpture that was created in honor of all the women who attended Yale University from its founding in 1701until the present time. The piece is made from green granite and shows the number of women enrolled each year.
Other works created by Lin include Systematic Landscapes, Three ways of Looking at the Earth, 2009. These art pieces are composed of mixed media which consist of wood, aluminum tubing, paint, particleboard, and straight pins. Located at the Indianapolis Museum of Art Above and Below, 2007 is composed of wire and was created by Lin to represent the geography of the White River which runs under the state on Indiana.
Lin most recent project is titled What is Missing? This will be featured at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco on September 17, 2009. A jack of all trades Maya Lin is widely known for her works with art and architecture and her efforts to bring public awareness to environmental issues.
