Biography
Akselrod was a painter, graphic artist, and theatre decorator. He moved to Russian during WWI, where he took lessons from V.N.Perelman in Tambov and attended the Tambov Drawing School from 1916 to 17. When in military service in Minsk and Smolensk, he attended the Proletkult art studio directed by V.F.Chtranikh (1919-20). From 1921 to 1928, he was a student at All-Union Art & Technical Institute in Moscow under the teachings of S.V.Gerasimov, P.Pavlinov, and V.A.Favorsky. He is best known for his watercolor paintings depicting jewish life in the Russian Empire and Soviet Union. His work was virtually unknown outside the Soviet Union until his daughter, Elena Akselrod published his biography and works in Israel in 1993.
