Biography
Melvin Warren lived the very stories of his art. The son of a cowboy, he was raised on ranches and experienced firsthand the grit and heroism of his father's profession. Warren completed his fine arts degree from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth and took jobs in commercial art to finance his true passion - painting and sculpting the cowboy life. During the 1960s, Warren joined the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA) and became a favorite artist of President Lyndon Johnson.
Warren's atmospheric Night Rider celebrates the steadfast heartiness of the cowboy. Here, a single cowboy on horseback, flanked by his faithful dog and a pack horse, plods through a barren, snowy expanse beneath a starry sky. Deviating from his usual earthy palette, Warren perfectly simulates the illuminated snow through a range of pale blues, and he further underscores icy temperatures through the animals' puffs of breath.
