Biography
Michael Craig-Martin is a contemporary painter and conceptual artist. He is particularly noted for his influence over the Young British Artists, many of whom he taught. He grew up in Washington D.C. and went on to study art at Yale University. Craig-Martin has a distinct pictorial technique often drawing everyday household items such as glasses, tennis shoes, and tables into his work. He often incorporates references from historical Dada artwork within his images. In 1974, he exhibited "An Oak Tree," which consists of a glass of water standing on a shelf attached to the gallery wall next to which is a text using a semiotic argument to explain why it is in fact an oak tree. However, when Australian Customs officials refused to let it enter the country as vegetation, he was forced to explain that it was, in fact, just a glass of water. His latest retrospective exhibition took place in 2006 at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, where 40 years worth of artwork was presented.
