Biography
| Dobouzhinskiy was born in Novgorod, lived and worked in St.Peterburg, Vitebsk, Kaunas, since 1939 - in UK and USA. Studied at the Drawing school of the the Society for Encouragement of Arts in St.Peterburg (1885 - 1887), the studio of A. Aschbe and S. Hollosi in Munich (1899 - 1900), under V. Mate (1901). Member of the World of Art group (1902-24), the Union of Russian Artists (1904 - 09). Worked for theatres in St.Peterburg and the Diagilev Enterprise in Paris (since 1914). Taught at the Academy of Arts (1918 - 1923), private and people`s art schools in St.Peterburg, Kaunas, Vitebsk, New York. Graphic artist, painter, book designer, theatre designer. Created landscapes, portraits, historical paintings. One of the best Russian graphic artists of the beginning of the XX century. Followed traditions of the Russian graphic school, had a sharp feeling of book nature and design, was a master of literary style of book graphics. He preferred the urban theme. |
