Northern Illinois University Art Museum to Open Comic Book Exhibition

The exhibition traces the development through to the Modern Age which encompasses Independent Comics and the rise of the Graphic Novel.

DEKALB, IL.- Northern Illinois University Art Museum presents: "Heroes, Villains and the American Zeitgeist; Comic books from the Rare Books and Special Collections Department of the University Libraries", January 19 – March 13, 2010 Hall Case Galleries, Altgeld Hall.

Lynne Thomas, Associate Professor and Curator, Rare Books and Special Collections, University Libraries, explores an exhibition of the important evolutionary ages of this popular art and literature form. Thomas’ chronological and sociological examination begins with the Golden Age (Superman, Captain America) when the earliest superheroes reflected a deep and abiding faith in the goodness of humanity, and continues through the Silver Age (Spiderman, The Fantastic Four) when the heroes were not perfect which encouraged readers to identify with their characters.

The exhibition then traces the development through to the Modern Age which encompasses Independent Comics and the rise of the Graphic Novel, blending more whimsical characters and complex storylines that blur the lines between hero and antihero. Heroes, Villains and the American Zeitgeist is part of our Pop Culture Exhibition Suite, and will captivate you with the lively and engaging art and literary nuances of this popular medium.

The opening reception for the NIU Art Museum Spring 2010 Pop Culture Exhibition Suite is Thursday January 21, 4:30 – 7:00 p.m. A special reception for NIU Art Museum members and Friends of the NIU Libraries will take place on Sunday, January 24, with a presentation by Lynne Thomas.
