Biography
| Bowles was a skilful amateur landscape painter and occasional portraitist. He matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford in 1758 and died in Hampshire 18 October 1810. He was the squire of North Aston, Oxon. He had a special devotion to the style of Richard Wilson and took lessons from Wilson's pupil, Thomas Jones from 1772-74. He signs his imitations of Wilson with a monogram 'OB'. Small-scale, full-length portraits of himself and his second wife, in the manner of Zoffany, in which he is shown as a painter, with a Wilson-like landscape on his easel, are at Clevedon Court, National Trust. |
