Biography
| A painter of views that were highly advanced for their time, Reschi can be considered a forerunner of eighteenth-century vedute pictures. Having traveled to Rome in his youth, Reschi studied under Bourguignon (also spelled Borgognone), from whom he learned to paint battle scenes. He also studied briefly with Salvator Rosa, according to some reports. Around 1665 Reschi went to Florence, and then spent some time in Lombardy (around 1670) before settling down in Tuscany. He specialized in battle scenes and landscapes, but he also produced occasional animal pictures. He worked for the Marchese Gerini, whose collection reportedly contained fourteen of Reschi's scenes and landscapes. Gerini supported Reschi's study with Livio Menus, Antonio Giusti, and Pier Dandini and also commissioned him to copy works by other masters in his gallery. The Riccardi family commissioned a series of four elements from Reschi, of which "Air" is now in Philadelphia. Reschi was later appointed Aiutante di camera by Cardinal Francesco Maria de Medici; Reschi painted numerous vistas to decorate the cardinal's Villa of Lampeggi, which included a view of the villa and a view of Fontebranda, situated outside Siena. Prince Ferdinando owned two of his paintings (now in the Pitti). |
