Biography
| Paolo Veneziano was the first named Venetian painter whose work has survived in any quantity. He was active from 1333 until his death in 1358 and founded the Ventian School. He popularized the polyptych which is a composite altarpiece carved, guilded, and painted on wood. The polyptych replaced wall mosaics as the most important element in Venetian church decoration for nearly two centuries. His work has been described as a synthesis of Byzantine and Gothic styles. His sons Luca and Giovanni collaborated with him in 1345 on the panels of the covering of the Pala d'Oro behind the high altar of Saing Mark's in Venice. |
