| Paul Cadmus was an American painter of the magic realism style. He was born in 1904 to a family of commercial artists, and after studying in New York for a time, Cadmus worked in commercial art as well. Beginning in 1933, Cadmus painted for the Federal Art Project under the Works Progress Administration. His work The Fleet's In!, which featured loose women, raucous sailors, and homosexuality caused public outrage, but launched Cadmus to fame. As a painter, Cadmus worked in egg tempera and was known for the detailed precision and socially critical themes of his work. Cadmus died of old age in 1999. |
