Biography
| An important painter of the Renaissance period, Pedro de Campana, 1503-1580, was born in Brussels as Pieter Kempeneer, and studied art in Flanders as a pupil of the painter Bernard Van Orley. He spent his early adulthood in Italy, however, where he was deeply moved by the works of Raphael. Many of the classical elements in Campana's works can be attributed to the influence of Raphael. In 1530, Campana left for Spain, where he took up permanent residence. From 1537, Campana was involved in setting up an academy in Seville with de Vargas and Torregiano. At the same time, Campana continued completing commissions for paintings and frescoes in and around Seville, including works in the monastery of St. Mary of Grace, the Church of Santa Cruz, and the Seville Cathedral. |
