Biography
| Pierre Falconet, a French portrait painter was born in Paris on October 8th 1741. Son of a sculptor, Etienne Maurice Flaconet, the younger Falconet was trained in Paris and came to London in 1765, allegedly to study under Reynolds. He at once became a member of the Society of Artists, and exhibited portraits and an occasional history picture SA 1767-72 RA 1773. He left London in 1773 to join his father in St. Petersburg and was back in Paris by 1778. He entered RA Schools 1769, and he had already achieved a curiously English type of portrait by 1766. Many of his London portraits were near profiles in the style of the drawings he made. In 1768-9, Falconet produced portraits of twelve of the leading English artists, which were engraved in the dotted manner by Pariset. The artist died in Paris on June 25th 1791 at the age of 49. |
