Biography
| Pieter Angellis was a painter of small conversations and histories and scenes of rustic and urban genre. His style is Flemish and derives from Teniers. Master in Antwerp Guild 1715/6. He lived in London 1716-28 in Covent Garden, which is the subject of several of his pictures. He liked to enliven his paintings (which are usually small) with displays of fruit, vegetables and fish. In 1728 he went to Rome with the sculptors Delvaux and P. Scheemakers, where he stayed three years. On his way back to England he found good business at Rennes, where he settled and died. His pictures are extremely neat and prevailingly light in tone. Circa 1722 he joined in a scheme of painting small scenes from the life of Charles I, jointly with Tillemans, Vanderbank, and others, which were elaborately engraved by Du Bosc, Baron and others. |
