Biography
| Flemish born painter of flowers and dead or live fowl. Born in Antwerp October 3rd 1684. The artist died in Richmond, Surrey, May 16th 1749. Son and pupil of his father, another Pieter Casteels. Came to London with his brother in law, Pieter Tillemans. Director in the Kneller Academy 1711 and returned briefly to Antwerp to become a Master 1713. His main practice was in London up to 1735 where he specialised in very accomplished arrangements of exotic birds in the manner of Hondecoeter, but occasionally painted small figure histories in architectural settings. In 1726 he published twelve etchings of his own compositions.The artist Retired in 1735, at first to Tooting and then to Richmond, where he made designs for calico printing. |
