Art Fortune | Pointillism
Pointillism was a style of painting in which the artist uses small distinct dots of color to create others colors and through this the impression of an image. This technique challenges the perception of the eye and the ability of the mind. It’s a scientific, abstract process yet, creates a figurative effect. Georges-Pierre Seurat was a strong contender of pointillism, his most famous work, “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” is to him a perfect harmony of color and composition that shows an afternoon shared by people of all social classes. It took him two years to finish this work, as he sought to discover the scientific application of color in order to create this captured harmony and emotion. Seurat often theorized about the concept of pointillism, which lead on to influence Neo-Impressionism, Pop Art, and Chromoluminarism.
