Biography
| Ralph Earl was an American portrait and landscape painter. He was born in Shrewsbury, Massachusettes, May 11th 1751. He was the elder brother of James Earl, who was also a portrait painter. Ralph was established as a portraitist at New Haven, but he fled to England in 1778 due to the outbreak of the American Revolution. In England from 1778 to 1785 he is said to have studied with Benjamin West. Due to the connections of West, Earl continued to produce portraits in London and in Norfolk. In particular, he painted the portraits of the king and several nobles. Some noted that despite his time in England, Earl's portraits retained a certain innocent New England quality. In 1785, he returned to US and settled finally in Connecticut. The artist died in Bolton, Connecticut, August 16th 1801. |
