Biography
| Born in Britain and trained at the Royal Academy Schools, Dadd showed a promising beginning with academic paintings. It was not until he began traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East that he began to show signs of madness. When he returned home he murdered his father and was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in asylums. Encouraged by doctors Dadd started painting again. His paintings struck the Victorian era as simply mad but in modern times and to modern eyes he is more than an interesting psychological occurrence. Dadd has proved to be an artist ahead of his time, a fine painter of original imaginary subjects. His paintings are packed with amazing detail and many times seem to be more like a tapestry rather than a traditional painting. A great example is The Fairy-Feller's Master Stroke (1855-64; London, Tate). A complete exhibition of his work was shown in London in 1974, this established Dadd as the originator of Magic Realism. |
